Hvorostovsky appeared in the opera under Downes at the Edinburgh Festival of 1998 in a production by Elijah Moshinsky, which surviving publicity suggests was a Covent Garden production put on as part of a Festival season of Verdi-Schiller operas. The Covent Garden house was then closed for reconstruction, and the production was first staged in Baden-Baden, but the house should probably be credited with it as a whole, not just the orchestra. It eventually reached London in October 2002, with much the same cast, including Hvorostovsky, and conducted by Downes celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of his debut at the house.
